Brett’s Treasure House Story: A Flawless Transition Despite Pandemic
At 24 years old, moving to a new state without family, friends, or job prospects is no small task. For Brett, who also has autism, the challenge of transitioning to a new life was even greater. Yet, he embarked on this journey to pursue a higher quality of life, and Treasure House became his home.
In early 2020, Brett completed a short-term live-in program in California before moving back home with his parents. “He and his family knew that he wasn’t meant to live at home – that he was capable of being independent, and that’s what he wanted,” said his life coach, Michelle VanderPloeg. Brett moved to Treasure House in May 2020, just months after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. This created a steep learning curve, as Brett couldn’t rely on his family for the usual support during his transition.
Despite these unusual circumstances, Brett made an impressive adjustment to his new home. “I already got a job at Amazon!” Brett shared, proudly. He began working at the fulfillment center in September 2020, joining other Treasure House residents employed there. With his new routine, Brett has not only taken charge of managing his own space but also embraced the Treasure House community with open arms. Known as the “life of the party,” Brett’s room is a popular spot among residents, with signs outside reading “Welcome to Brett’s Party Room” and “Common Area #3.”
“He’s always listening to music, loves spending time with other residents, and if nothing’s going on, he’ll plan an activity and invite everyone to join,” said Michelle. “He’s funny, easygoing, and has a really welcoming manner.”
Three months after Brett settled into Treasure House, his parents were finally able to visit. “I’m thrilled to see Brett so confident and happy, living each day with a sense of belonging in the Treasure House community,” said his mother, Andrea. “He’s working hard to manage his new level of independence, and I’m incredibly proud of him. I appreciate his life coach, who works closely with him to support his goals, and the community advisors who are always there. Treasure House was the perfect choice for Brett, offering him both purpose and the right balance of independence and support.”
